Bar News Summer 2010-11 is out now

The bumper Summer 2010-11 edition of Bar News will land in mailboxes in coming days. Special features include a retrospective on 25 years of the journal, the first women to practise at the New South Wales Bar and security for costs against impecunious corporate plaintiffs. We reproduce the inaugural Sir Garfield Barwick Address, delivered by Senator Brandis, on 'The lawyer's duty to public life'. There's the usual mix of book reviews, photos of social events, coverage of recent appointments to state and federal courts and the Tri-State Bar Football Competition. And no edition would be complete without Bullfry. If you do not receive your copy by Friday, please contact the publications manager.

Speeches from the Australian Legal Convention

Tue Mar 27 2007 12:21:11

I draw to members attention two speeches given last weekend at the 35th Australian Legal Convention. The first is the State of the Judicature address given by the Hon Justice A M Gleeson AC, Chief Justice of Australia.

This address is given biennially by the Chief Justice of Australia. Sir Garfield Barwick gave the first State of Judicature address in 1977. The address always commands our attention. This year’s address is the last to be given by Chief Justice Gleeson, who retires in August next year.

The second address entitled “Access to Justice and Access to Lawyers” was given by the Hon J J Spigelman AC, Chief Justice of New South Wales. The address draws on scenes from classical antiquity and Elizabethan times to give a fresh perspective on the law and lawyers in popular culture.

Members may also access the other speeches at the convention, which include "The State of The Profession" by Tim Bugg, the President of the Law Council of Australia and "Law and Government" by Federal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock.

Barristers on Bikes

Fri Oct 04 2013 14:47:48

On Sunday, 29 September 2013, a number of members of the NSW Bar took part in the 2013 Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride to help raise funds for research into men’s prostate cancer. Members who took part included the dapper looking Michael McHugh SC of 16 Wardell Chambers, Dean Jordan SC of Forbes Chambers, Dominic Toomey of 11 Garfield Barwick Chambers and Jeremy Gruzman of 8 Garfield Barwick Chambers. Garry McGrath SC of 8 Wentworth Chambers (pictured here on his mean machine in Phillip Street) has promised In Brief that he will participate in next year’s ride to help do his part “to kick prostate cancer in the bum”. As presently advised, there is insufficient evidence to declare the above group of barristers as an Outlaw Motorcycle Gang.

Mark Higgins, barrister at 11 Garfield Barwick Chambers, is in training for an Australian skydiving record attempt this month. He will head to California to break the Australian large formation record of 112 skydivers.
