The DPP and his wish list

Fri Nov 12 2010

On 6 November 2010 Nicholas Cowdery AM QC delivered an address titled, "Rule of Law and A Director of Public Prosecutions" at the 2010 Rule of Law in Australia Conference. In his speech, the DPP outlined what he would do with a "legislative wand": decriminalise drug possession and use and small-scale trafficking, transfer the conduct of all prosecutions, including summary prosecutions, to the DPP, expand the range of rehabilitative and therapeutic programs provided in prisons and create a Bail Act "quite unlike the draft that is out for consultation". His speech is available from the ODPP web site>
