LCA: Federal Police adopted a "better to be safe than sorry" approach to Haneef case

Mon Sep 22 2008

The Law Council, in itssubmission to the Clarke Inquiry into the Case of Dr Mohamed Haneef, hascalled for an independent review of all Australia's terrorism laws. Speaking ata public forum, held in the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, President Ross Ray QC said that: "When the police arrested and detained Dr Haneef, they appeared to be operating in the shadow of the law, rather than according to the letter of the law."

Joining a panel of legal and law enforcement experts at the forum, Ross Ray QC said, “We have long argued that our anti-terrorism laws strike the wrong balance between community safety and individual freedoms.”
