LCA: Federal Police adopted a "better to be safe than sorry" approach to Haneef case

The Law Council, in its�submission to the Clarke Inquiry into the Case of Dr Mohamed Haneef, has�called for an independent review of all Australia's terrorism laws. Speaking at�a public forum, held in the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, President Ross Ray QC said that: "When the police arrested and detained Dr Haneef, they appeared to be operating in the shadow of the law, rather than according to the letter of the law."

Joining a panel of legal and law enforcement experts at the forum, Ross Ray QC said, “We have long argued that our anti-terrorism laws strike the wrong balance between community safety and individual freedoms.”
