Thu Apr 28 2016

The NSW adult prison population continues to grow at a brisk rate. The Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research has released its March 2016 quarterly update on custody statistics, which shows the NSW adult prison population reached a record high in March 2016 of 12,390. That's an increase of 15 per cent over the last two years.

The increase is attributable to an increase in the number of prisoners on remand - 18 per cent between April 2015 and March 2016(from 3,466 to 4,090).
