The President wishes all LGBTI members of the NSW Bar an enjoyable Mardi Gras weekend.

This year marks 40 years on from the original 1978 street Festival turned protest that is now the annual Mardi Gras parade which is held on the first weekend of March each year. This year is also the first Mardi Gras parade since marriage equality has been achieved in Australia. The Mardi Gras provides a platform for social justice and providing a voice for all LGBTI members of the community.

The NSW Bar is a strong advocate for the proper administration of justice and it continues to ensure access to justice for all members of the community no matter their background, gender, race or sexual orientation. The NSW Bar Association’s Diversity & Equality Committee works on initiatives to ensure that the NSW Bar is diverse and inclusive members of the Bar for the greater benefit of the broader community.

Advocate for Change, Richard Weinstein SC said that, “This is the first Mardi Gras in the era of marriage equality. We rejoice living in a country that has recently spoken out overwhelmingly in favour of fairness and diversity. We salute and remember those brave members of the Bar, some now absent, who worked tirelessly and without pay so that we can live in this age of greater equal opportunity.”
