Time For Justice

Tue Oct 14 2014

Throughout October, International Justice Mission Australia is running the Time For Justice campaign. The Barrister's Clerks Association, along with 9 Windeyer Chambers and Trust Chambers, are ambassadors for the campaign.

Time For Justice engages legal practitioners to commit to donating the equivalent of one billable hour at their charge-out rate to sponsor local IJM lawyers and social workers in Cebu, The Philippines. Essentially, a practitioner’s billable hour becomes a means of empowering lawyers in Australia to partner with their incomparably under-resourced colleagues in the developing world who are committed to liberating the oppressed. All donations are tax deductible. The campaign target is to raise $100,000 - the equivalent of the annual salary of five full-time lawyers in Cebu.

Donations can be made through the NSW Barrister's Clerks Association GoFundraise page.

International Justice Mission is a global organisation that protects the poor from violence throughout the developing world. IJM partners with local authorities to rescue victims of violence, bring criminals to justice, restore survivors, and strengthen justice systems.

All funds raised from the Time For Justice campaign will support the extension of a landmark project in the Philippines that has dramatically reduced the rate of children being sold for sex in one of the world’s worst sexual exploitation hotspots. IJM’s "Project Lantern" is now in its second four-year phase. The first phase of the project has seen a 79% reduction in the number of children being sold for sex in metro Cebu in the Philippines. IJM’s philosophy is simple: When public justice systems are made to protect the poor – and slave owners, traffickers and other criminals can no longer act with impunity – millions of vulnerable children, women and men will never be abused.
