LCA concerns over Counter-Terrorism Bill 2015

Tue Feb 16 2016

The president-elect of the Law Council, Fiona McLeod SC, has expressed concern about a number of provisions in the Counter-Terrorism Bill 2015, despite significant changes to the legislation proposed by the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security. Of particular concern were a proposed system of special advocates and the issuing of preventative detention orders (PDOs).

"PDOs are a form of imprisonment without charge, trial or conviction, which has always been justified on the basis of an imminent threat to public safety," Ms McLeod said. View the media release here.
