A win for the legal assistance sector

Thu Mar 26 2015

In response to fierce criticism from bar associations and law societies around the country, Attorney-General George Brandis has announced that planned cuts to legal assistance will not take effect on 1 July 2015. Instead, $25.5 million of funding for Legal Aid commissions, community legal centres and Indigenous legal service providers for 2013-14-2017 will be restored. Total federal government funding for the legal assistance sector from 2013-14 to 2016-17 will be over $1.327 billion. View the attorney general's media release here. The attorney's announcement was applauded by NSW Attorney General Brad Hazzard.
