American Bar Association appoints Australian Barrister

Wed Mar 04 2015

Philippe Doyle Gray of 8 Wentworth Chambers has been appointed to the governing Council of the American Bar Association's Law Practice Division.

The ABA statement reads:

For the first time in its history, the American Bar Association has elected a lawyer practising outside North America to its Law Practice Division’s governing Council. From amongst a broad international field of candidates, the LPD governing Council unanimously elected Philippe Doyle Gray of 8 Wentworth Chambers.

Doyle Gray’s 2015–2016 term affords a novel opportunity for members of the Australian legal profession in general—and members of the New South Wales Bar Association in particular—to form closer ties to the 400,000–member American Bar Association and create positive change.

Tom Bolt, Chair of the Nominating Committee that offered Doyle Gray for election and Chair Elect of the American Bar Association’s Law Practice Division, noted that this Doyle Gray’s election provided “a tremendous opportunity for lawyers on both sides of the Pacific to collaborate and work together for the betterment of the profession. We have so very much to learn from one another as we look to the future delivery of legal services making them more effective, competent, ethical, and responsive to the needs of clients and the public.”

Later this year, Doyle Gray will host an information evening at the New South Wales Bar Association about the American Bar Association Law Practice Division, where he hopes to obtain members’ views about how this unique opportunity best be utilised.

In the meantime, he would be delighted if fellow members from New South Wales would join him in Chicago at TECHSHOW 2015 where he is returning to teach next month. Doyle Gray is the first—and only—Australian lawyer ever invited as a member of the teaching faculty. Interested members can learn more from the conference web site www.techshow.com.
