Delays in approving grants of legal aid

Fri Jul 06 2018

Following representations from the New South Wales Bar Association, Legal Aid NSW has reviewed its processes regarding grants of legal aid. Legal Aid NSW has advised that significant improvements are being made to their system for processing grants payments and that grants approvals will be provided in a more timely manner.

In the interim, an arrangement has been made whereby the Bar Association will notify Legal Aid NSW of delays in impending matters. Members who have a matter where a grant has not been assessed by 48 hours before their matter is listed should contact the association’s deputy executive director, Alastair McConnachie, at amcconnachie@nswbar.asn.au who will contact Legal Aid NSW on their behalf.
