NSW Government defers controversial motor accidents injuries bill

Wed Jun 19 2013

The NSW Government has confirmed that the Motor Accidents Injuries Amendment Bill 2013 has been deferred until August 2013. The acting minister for finance, Andrew Constance, has announced that there will be consultation with stakeholders between now and August.

The Bar Association’s preferred position is that the bill be abandoned due to the unfairness of the proposed no fault scheme. The work of the legal profession, including the significant efforts of the Bar Association, has contributed to the decision of the cross-benchers not to support the bill, and the decision of the NSW Government to defer it pending further consultation. Andrew Stone has appeared twice this week on the Bar Association's behalf on the Ray Hadley Show (2GB) to discuss the proposals in the bill. Transcripts are held in the Bar Library.

The Bar Association will be involved in the further consultation foreshadowed by the government and members will be kept informed of developments.
