Australian Academy of Law inaugural Patron's Address

Mark the date in the diary: 5.30 pm, 30 October, Federal Court’s No 1 Courtroom, Level 21, Law Courts Building. The�Australian Academy of Law�will be holding the inaugural Patron’s Address, to be delivered by the chief justice of the High Court, the Hon Robert French AC. The AAL is a broadly-based and permanent body, comprising individuals from all parts of the legal community—elected from the judiciary, legal practitioners and legal academics—united in a common goal of advancement of the discipline of law and the justice system.

French CJ has chosen as his title, "Judges and the Academy—Dialogue of the Hard of Hearing?". Starting from the premise that ‘the things that judges do and that legal academics do are different in kind’, the chief justice suggests that there is nevertheless a "dialogue" of sorts, "as judges refer to academic work and academics review, analyse and criticise the work of the court and offer syntheses and extrapolate doctrinal developments good and bad". In this inaugural Patron’s Address French CJ will offer a judicial perspective on the interaction between legal academic writing and the judicial function.
