New South Wales Bar takes the honours north of the border

Mon Sep 12 2011

The inaugural New South Wales Bar Sports Law Conferenceand the annual Bar Football “State of Origin”were held on 10 September 2011 at the Gold Coast and the organisers wish to thankmembers for their support. Special thanks to Graham Turnbull SC, John Marshall SC, Elisabeth Peden and Daniel Tynan for volunteering their considerable time and expertise to ensuring the success of the inaugural Sports Law Conference. The presentations were well-received by all delegates. It was a testament to the intellectual powerhouse of the NSW Bar, with many delegates commenting that it was the best conference that they had ever attended!

The NSW Bar’s success off the field was matched by its football sporting prowess on the field. Through sheer grit and determination and against a Queensland team brimming with confidence (and a few young guns), the NSW Bar prevailed 3-2. That performance was repeated against a much depleted Victorian team in which NSW won 4-0. In the final game of the day, the Victorians, bolstered by a number of NSW players were unable to hold off a sustained attack by the Queenslanders to lose 3-1. Best on field for NSW were Daniel Tynan (in his debut interstate performance) and Vahan Bedrossian.

NSW Bar FC retained the Suncorp NSW Bar v Vic Bar Annual Football Challenge Cup (for an undefeated 4th successive year) and the Suncorp NSW Bar v Vic Bar v Qld Bar Annual Football Challenge Cup (for an undefeated 2nd successive year). A full report will follow in the next edition of Bar News.
