Thu Aug 04 2011

Lawyers from all over Australia will have an opportunity to learn about Aboriginal legal systems at the 2011 National Indigenous Legal Conference, which will be held in Sydney on 12-13 August 2011. Terry Chenery, president of Ngalaya, the Indigenous lawyers and law students association of NSW, says speakers such as George Pascoe Gaymarani and the Rev Dr Djiniyini Gondarra between them have written numerous published papers on Ngarra and Yoglnu law.

Mr Chenery says that "Mr Pascoe and the Rev Dr Djiniyini Gondarra are men at the pinnacle of the Yolgnu legal system. You might say that they are the equivalent of justices of the High Court of Australia."
