The Bar Football Team seeks talented players

Thu Mar 04 2010

Expressions of interest are sought from members of the bar who wish to join the NSW Bar Football Squad in 2010. The only qualification for selection is a love of the Beautiful Game. A team was formed two years ago in response to a challenge from the Victorians. Thus began the friendly on-field rivalry that is the annual Suncorp NSW Bar v Victorian Bar Challenge Cup. The NSW Bar won at the inaugural encounter in Sydney in 2008 and successfully defended it in Melbourne the following year. In August-September of this year the NSW Bar will defend its title against a resurgent Victorian squad, this time on home soil. Dedicated fans will be watching closely to see if, as rumours suggest, the Victorian Bar has imported one or more Brazilian star players.

In 2009, the NSW Bar fielded its first team in the Domain Soccer League, a lunchtime competition in Sydney's Domain, and the team will return to the Domain between April and August. Plans are also underway to:

  • resurrect the Sir Arthur George Challenge Cup (an annual match with the NSW Solicitors – last contested and won by the bar in 1988);

  • start a NSW Bar v Queensland Bar Challenge Cup; and

  • field a team in the annual Solicitors’ Inter-firm Football Day.
