Fri Jun 27 2008

Attorney-General Robert McClelland delivered a speech yesterday at the Annual Conference of the Australian and New Zealand Society of International Law. He spoke of the importance of "effective international citizenship" and Australia'sresponsibility to help shape "a stronger, rules-based order for the modern world".

In pursuit of this goal, the government would place a priority onits commitment to human rights and to rebuilding a strong relationship with the UN. It will signthe Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Optional Protocol to the Convention for the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.
