RACS issues call for donations

The Refugee Advice and Casework Service (RACS) has issued an emergency appeal for donations to fund two expert refugee lawyers and cover the costs of interpreting for 1800 people seeking asylum subject to the Fast Track process.

Notices threatening termination of welfare payments and bridging visas are being sent to hundreds of the approximately 12,000 people who came to Australia by boat prior to December 2013 but are yet to make applications for refugee status.

These 1800 people were promised legal assistance and have been waiting patiently, but with this new policy and tight deadlines being imposed the clock is now ticking. $60 supports a person seeking asylum with an hour of legal assistance. Every dollar helps. An extra $100 funds an interpreter for an hour.
