Are you OK?

A reminder from the Bar Association's Health and Well Being Committee: R U OK? Day is Thursday, 8 September 2016.

This is the national day of action for the R U OK? suicide prevention charity. But it’s also a reminder to take time to check in with the colleagues and friends who matter to you. Part of the R U OK? message is that we don’t need to "fix" someone, solve their problems, or give them answers to life. It’s about starting a conversation, supporting them and being there for them.

It is a fact that one in five Australians will experience an issue with mental health. The R U OK? "at Law" project notes the following additional facts about people working in the legal profession:

  • Many of us will hold ourselves to impossibly high standards and not know how to put the mistakes we make into perspective
  • Mental ill-health and depression are big issues in the legal profession. When compared to other professions, lawyers experienced the highest incidence of depressive symptoms.
