Peak legal bodies support the Malaysian Bar Council

The Australian Bar Association and the Law Council of Australia have thrown their support behind the Malaysian Bar Council, whose independence is threatened by the Malaysian Government's proposed amendments to the Legal Profession Act 1976. Both the LCA and the ABA have written to Prime Minister Najib Razak to voice serious concerns, particularly in respect of a provision to grant the minister in charge of legal affairs the power to appoint two government representatives on Bar Council.
