Access to justice

The Legal Assistance Referral Scheme is calling for volunteers to join the Duty Barrister Scheme.

The Duty Barrister Scheme is an initiative of the New South Wales Bar Association. It operates every week day at the Downing Centre (Criminal) and John Maddison Tower (Civil) Local Courts to help people who cannot afford a lawyer, and who have a matter before the court on the day.

There has also been a spike in requests from District Court judges and/or the DPP for duty barristers to provide urgent advice mid-trial to witnesses and, to a lesser extent, the accused in complex criminal proceedings.

If you would like to volunteer your services please fill out the application form and return to legalassist@nswbar.asn.au. For further information about the scheme please contact Ray Burgess on ph: (02) 9229 1710.
