Reflections of the Wootton Decision

This seminar is a joint initiative of the NSW Judicial Commission Ngara Yura Committee, the NSW Bar Association First Nations Committee and the Law Society of NSW Indigenous Issues Committee.

CLOSING SOON - Call for papers

The Bar Association's Professional Development Department invites members to submit suggestions and/or abstracts for papers to be included in the Association's 2020 Regional CPD Conference series. The conferences will be held on Saturdays in Ballina, Newcastle, Orange, Parramatta and Sydney during February and March.

The dates for 2020 Conferences are:

  • Newcastle, Saturday 22 February 2020, Novotel Newcastle Beach
  • North Coast (Ballina), Saturday 29 February 2020, Ramada Hotel
  • Orange, Saturday 7 March 2020, Orange Ex-Servicemen’s
  • Sydney, Saturday 21 March 2020, Hilton Hotel Sydney
  • Parramatta, Saturday 28 March 2020, Park Royal Parramatta

Interested barristers, solicitors, academics, legal and non-legal professionals are invited to submit suggestions for papers online, HERE. During the submission process, you will be asked to provide your contact details, conference preference, a working title and, where possible, a short description or abstract of your suggestion presentation. All submissions must come under at least one of the four categories of CPD.

Suggestions and abstracts are requested by Monday 30 September 2019.

Orders under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2019

The Minister for Customer Service, Victor Dominello MP has today published two Orders under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017.

The maximum costs for legal services and maximum fees for medico-legal services have been indexed in line with inflation for the period starting 1 October 2019. You can view the maximum fees and costs that apply from 1 October 2019 on SIRA’s website.

The following indexation orders have also been published on the NSW Legislation website today:

• Motor Accident Injuries (Indexation) Amendment Order 2019 • Motor Accidents (Determination of Non-Economic Loss) Amendment Order 2019
• Motor Accidents Compensation (Determination of Loss) Amendment Order 2019

The Orders commence on 1 October 2019.

Join the Black Dog Institute for the next Exercise Your Mood Walk on Saturday, 12 October 2019 at Sydney Olympic Park. Starting at 6.00pm, the walk will take you on a 21.1km journey through urban parkland and past the iconic stadiums of Sydney Olympic Park, finishing at midnight at Fig Grove.

Walking together will provide the opportunity to start a conversation about mental health and the event will raise much needed funds for Black Dog Institute. Bring your friends and colleagues, meet our Exercise Your Mood ambassador Michelle Bridges and fundraise $100 for mental health. By walking and raising funds, you will support vital education programs provided to schools, communities and medical professionals.

This very practical course recognises the great sensitivities involved in questioning witnesses who are vulnerable. The full-day program includes advocacy training from senior instructors in areas the subject of recommendations by the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

New acting commissioner - Land and Environment Court of NSW

Appointments

Philip Clay SC has been appointed as an acting commissioner of the Land and Environment Court for the period commencing 4 September 2019 and expiring on 3 September 2020.

Acting Commissioner Philip Clay SC was admitted as a solicitor in 1979 and was called to the New South Wales Bar in 1992. He was appointed senior counsel in 2011.

UN Day Lecture – 2019

The UN Day Lecture series is an annual initiative of the UNCITRAL National Coordination Committee for Australia (UNCCA) to highlight the work of UNCITRAL for practitioners and students. A Lecture will be held in each Australian capital city, with a local speaking panel.
