Great Wall walk for Black Dog institute

Elizabeth Picker from Edmund Barton Chambers will take on the Great Wall Trek in China from 30 September to 7 October to raise money for the Black Dog institute.

Elizabeth is inspired by the work of Black Dog Institute and wants to support this worthy cause by her participation in Black Dog Institute's Hike for Mental Health: China 2019. The principles governing the selection and appointment of those to be designated as senior counsel by the president of the Bar Association are contained in the Senior Counsel Selection Protocol and the Guide to Practical Aspects.

Applications must be submitted online, no later than 5.00pm on Wednesday, 31 July 2019.

Advocacy Skills workshop

Coming up in CPD – 8 & 9 November

The NSW Bar Association is pleased to advise that it will be offering an Advocacy Skills workshop specifically for those 3-5 years out who are looking for an opportunity to practice trial and contested hearing techniques and strategies with the assistance of a faculty of experienced instructors who offer constructive and practical suggestions to improve the advocacy of each individual participant.

Each workshop involves instruction, performance and review of the skills, disciplines and techniques involved in good advocacy. Participants will use specifically developed materials to prepare set advocacy tasks from a case study, then examine and cross examine witness as well as present argument before the decision maker.

Places will be limited on the workshop so please register an expression of interest for the workshop now by providing your details here. In recognition of the importance of this training the workshop will be provided at a subsidised rate to all NSW Bar Association members. The cost for the workshop will be $475, which includes a PDF copy of “The AAI Advocacy Manual” for each participant.

The seminar will examine and explain practical aspects of the Online Court, established by Practice Note DC (Civil) No.1B, and which applies to all matters in the General List in the District Court Sydney from 1 October 2018. Female Law Students Open Day

The Bar Association seeks volunteers to assist in running the Female Law Students Open Day on the morning of Friday, 16 August 2019. Volunteers are needed to take groups of students to meet with judges, to see the courts in operation and to answer queries the students may have about life as a barrister. The Open Day provides students with an opportunity to gain some insight into the workings of the Bar, and is conducted to encourage students to consider a career as a barrister. If you are able to volunteer your time between the hours of 8.45am and 12.30pm please email Ting Lim.

2019 Common Law Drinks

The Common Law Committee & the President of the Bar Association would like to invite all NSW Bar Members to the 2019 Common Law Drinks to be held on Level 1 of the Angel Hotel (125 Pitt St) on Thursday, 29 August. The Guest of Honour will be the Hon Justice Michael Slattery AM RAN, who will say a few words on the evening.

Tickets to the drinks are $75 for judges and barristers over five years and $55 for clerks and barristers under five years. The function will start at 5.15pm and drinks and canapés will be served from then onwards, RSVPs are due by COB 20 August. Please visit the website for details on how to register.

Diversity & Inclusion – LGBTIQ+ - Out at Work: from Prejudice to Pride

The Diversity Council of Australia undertook a study with RMIT University involving conversations with over 1600 LGBTIQ+ workers about their experiences which revealed how important it is for workplaces to work on LGBTIQ+ inclusion. Members can download the infographic showing the benefits of LGBTIQ+ inclusion in workplaces here.

The Bar Association's Professional Development Department invites members to submit suggestions and/or abstracts for papers to be included in the Association's 2020 Regional CPD Conference series. The conferences will be held on Saturdays in Ballina, Newcastle, Orange, Parramatta and Sydney during February and March.

Members are advised the Association experienced a major hardware failure overnight meaning until 4pm this afternoon we were unable to send or receive emails.
