The 2017 Annual Plunkett Lecture

Thursday, 9 November 2017: Mark Tedeschi AM QC will deliver the Annual Plunkett Lecture on 9 November 2017 at 5.15pm in the NSW Bar Association Common Room, to be chaired by the Attorney General, the Honourable Mark Speakman SC. Mr Tedeschi is the Senior Crown Prosecutor in New South Wales and the author of ‘Murder at Myall Creek: The Trial that Defined a Nation’, published by Simon & Schuster in 2016. Mr Tedeschi will deliver a lecture titled "John Hubert Plunkett QC and the Myall Creek murder trials."

Lord Howe Island Conference

In April 2018 (7 – 14 April) Learned Friends is holding a Conference on Lord Howe Island. This will be the 5th conference Learned Friends has held on the island. Speakers include Bernie Gross QC, Peter Cummings SC and Giles Coakes. Please note that April is a busy time of year on the island and as such flights and accommodation are becoming limited. Criminal justice legislation factsheets

Last week the NSW Government passed a number of significant pieces of criminal justice legislation through the State Parliament. That legislation included the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Amendment (Sentencing Options) Bill 2017 the Parole Legislation Amendment Bill 2017 and the Justice Legislation Amendment (Committals and Guilty Pleas) Bill 2017.

The Department of Justice has now released new sentencing and parole factsheets for the information of the community.

For Remembrance Day 2017

The Supreme Court will commemorate the sacrifice and service of the New South Wales Legal Profession in the First World War on Wednesday, 8 November 2017 at 5.15pm in the Banco Court, Queens Square. Learn more here.

The Supreme Court has established The War Memorial Project page on its website, which includes a number of items of interest, including speeches and other materials from last year's Remembrance Day Eve ceremony.

2017 Maurice Byers Annual Lecture and Centenary Conference

The 2017 Maurice Byers Annual Lecture will delivered by The Hon James Allsop AO, Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia on 1 November 2017 at 5.30 pm in the New South Wales Bar Association Common Room.

The 2017 Annual Lecture will be preceded by the Maurice Byers Centenary Conference, to celebrate the life and times of the late Sir Maurice Byers CBE QC on the occasion of the centenary of his birth. The Conference will be held from 2.00pm - 5.00pm in the NSW Bar Association Common Room. To view the 2017 conference program please click here.

John Koowarta Reconciliation Law Scholarship - applications now open

Scholarships

Applications for the 2018 John Koowarta Reconciliation Law Scholarship (Koowarta Scholarship) are now open. Applications close on 8 December 2017. The successful applicant will receive a scholarship to the value of $5,500 for the 2018 academic year, or, on a pro-rata basis an offer for periods of part-time study. Learn more here.

The Koowarta Scholarship was established in 1994, with the aim of promoting the study and practice of the law by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and, commemorates John Koowarta as a member of the Winychanam community and a traditional owner of the Archer River region on the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland.

50 years of UNCITRAL - What's next?

International trade law

The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) was founded 50 years ago. The United Nations Day Lecture will be held on Thursday, 9 November 2017 in Court 1, Federal Court of Australia, Queens Square between 5.15pm and 6.30pm. The lecture is an initiative of the UNCITRAL National Coordination Committee for Australia (UNCCA). The speaker will be Tim Castle, barrister and chair of UNCCA and the chair will be Chrissa Loukas SC. It will be presented around Australia to introduce lawyers, academics and students to the past and future work of UNCITRAL. Admission will be free, but registration is required. Learn more here.

The Uluru Statement - tomorrow

Members are invited a discussion on the Uluru Statement From the Heart, which was issued on 26 May 2017 at the First Nations' National Constitutional Convention. This seminar is a joint initiative of the NSW Judicial Commission Ngara Yura Committee, the Bar Association's Indigenous Barristers’ Trust and the Law Society of NSW Indigenous Issues Committee. It will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, 24 October 2017, at 5.15pm in the Common Room. This event will be live-streamed via the Bar Association's website.

Spigelman Public Law Oration and Public Law Section Dinner - payment due today

The Hon T F Bathurst AC, chief justice of NSW will deliver the fourth Spigelman Public Law Oration on Thursday, 26 October 2017 in the Banco Court at 5:15pm. The subject of the oration will be the limits of judicial review of "integrity" bodies. The oration will be followed by the annual dinner of the Public Law Section (formerly the Constitutional and Administrative Law Section) of the NSW Bar at 6.30 pm in Fix Wine Bar & Restaurant, 111 Elizabeth St Sydney. Charity at the bar

Members and their friends are invited to the 2017 Pink & Blue Ribbon Breakfast on Friday, 27 October at Verandah Restaurant. Come and enjoy a two-course breakfast and help raise money for two wonderful charities. There will also be a fabulous raffle drawn on the morning with amazing prizes to be won!

Raffle tickets are now be available to purchase at the Bar Association Reception. RSVP for the breakfast today, RSVPs will be accepted until Monday 23 October unless sold out prior.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is the leading community-funded national organisation in Australia raising money for research into prevention and cure of breast cancer. Research programs funded by the NBCF cover every aspect of breast cancer, from increasing understanding of genetics to providing better treatments and improving ways to support women and their families. The NBCF relies almost entirely on corporate and community support to continue its work.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) is the peak national body for prostate cancer in Australia. The PCFA focuses on funding innovative research, support, information and advocacy for men with prostate cancer and raising awareness across the community. PCFA operates over 100 supports groups Australia wide who provide support and advocacy, via the phone or face to face to men and their families affected by prostate cancer. These groups meet regularly and provide a meeting forum for the exchange of experiences, ideas and news as well as an invaluable support network.
