Beginning 1 July 2017, the Family Court of Australia and the Federal Circuit Court will no longer post hard copies of sealed orders by mail to legal representatives. Court orders will be signed and sealed electronically and will be available on the Commonwealth Courts Portal. Learn more here.

Notification for seminar on Hughes v The Queen

On Monday, 17 July 2017 the Public Defenders will host a discussion on "Tendency Evidence post Hughes v The Queen [2017] HCA 20" with a panel consisting of: Phillip Boulten SC, Emeritus Fellow Andrew Ligertwood and Kirsten Edwards (Forbes Chambers). The panel will be chaired by Ertunc Ozen, public defender.

Fees payable in criminal cases

The Criminal Procedure Amendment (Fees) Regulation 2017, which amends Schedule 2 of the Criminal Procedure Regulation 2010, has been published on the Legislation NSW website and will commence tomorrow, 1 July 2017. Learn more here.

Law Reports Linking Principles

A working group of legal publishers and councils of law reporting, under the chairmanship of Justice Steven Rares, has announced a new protocol for open navigation links between online law reports. The Law Reports Linking Principles will give users of LexisNexis, JADE Barnet and others "simultaneous access to multiple legal publications", while protecting the proprietary information of each publisher. IBA 2017 Special Counsel Registration

Organisers of the International Bar Association's Annual Conference, to be held in Sydney on 8-13 October 2017, have announced a 50% discount for Australian and New Zealand based corporate counsel who register online before the registration early bird deadline of 21 July 2017. In addition, this would be a flexible registration that can be passed around amongst the lawyers in the legal team. As a result, it would be possible for a different lawyer from the corporate legal department to attend the conference each day. Learn more here.

2017 Justice Awards

Nominations for 2017 Justice Awards are still open. These annual awards recognise the contributions of individuals and organisations to improving access to justice in NSW, particularly for socially and economically disadvantaged people. The Foundation is seeking nominations in four Award categories:

The Bar Association sponsors the Law and Justice Volunteer Award. The 2017 Justice Awards dinner will be held on Thursday, 19 October 2017 at the Strangers' Dining Room, NSW Parliament House.

Vale Michael Anthony Simpson (1941-2017)

Michael Anthony Simpson, who was called to the NSW Bar in 1985, died earlier this week. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, 4 July 2017 at 2.00pm in the Magnolia Chapel of Macquarie Park Crematorium, corner of Delhi and Plassey Rds, Macquarie Park.

Thirdly, the advocate's role in numerous aspects including choosing a mediator, pre-mediation conferences with the client, preparing a position paper, making an opening, advising the client during mediation, and preparing for settlement. New Local Court practice notes

The chief magistrate of the Local Court, Judge Graeme Henson AM, has issued three practice notes affecting new procedures in committal hearings and case management in criminal and civil proceedings. The changes take effect on 26 June. They are: Comm 1 - Procedures to be adopted for committal hearings in the Local Court; Crim 1 - Case management of criminal proceedings in the Local Court; and Civ 1 - Case management of civil proceedings in the Local Court

The Francis Forbes Society for Australian Legal History aims to bring together scholars, lawyers and the general public interested in legal history. It sponsors lectures, essay competitions, research projects and a variety of seminars and discussion groups. Events to look forward to this year include the Forbes Lecture (September), to be delivered by the Hon Justice Margaret Beazley AO; the JH Plunkett Lecture, to be delivered by Mark Tedeschi QC; and Australian Legal History Tutorials. Membership runs from 1 July to 30 June. Download an application form here. Transferable tickets for the IBA Annual Conference, Sydney 2017

Suitable for barristers' chambers

The International Bar Association Annual Conference will be held in Sydney from 8 – 13 October 2017. For the Sydney Conference, the IBA will offer a transferable ticket at the IBA member rate for chambers with 20 barristers or less. As a result, it would be possible for a different member of chambers to attend the conference each day.

This special transferable ticket can only be purchased online, and is only available until the early bird deadline of 21 July. The rate will appear on the online registration page under the title ‘Australian Law Firm with 20 lawyers or less’. It will only be applicable to those selecting private practice and Australia during the registration process.

Moses SC raises more than $20K in Vinnies CEO Sleepout

InBrief is pleased to report that President Arthur Moses SC survived last night's 2017 Vinnies CEO Sleepout and raised more than $20,000 for the cause. Speaking after the event, the president told InBrief: "We regularly see people who are homeless taking refuge in the legal profession precinct. One of the more confronting trends this winter is the increasing rates of women over the age of 55 years old who are homeless.
