Dealing with difficult people and stressful situations at work

The Women Lawyers Association of NSW invites members to a talk by Josie Wakim, Psychologist & Coach on "Dealing with difficult people and stressful situations at work". Do not wait until you have confirmation of insurance to return your completed renewal form and payment. Preliminary processing of your practising certificate can begin and your insurance can be matched up with your renewal documentation once confirmation of insurance is received.

Swearing-in ceremony for Judge Brana Obradovic

A ceremonial sitting will be held to welcome Ms Brana Obradovic as a judge of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia on Friday, 3 Jun 2016 at 9.30am in Courtroom 9 of the Parramatta Registry. Lyn Judge will speak on behalf of the New South Wales and Australian bar associations. Barristers should wear a robe, but not a wig.

The annual Forbes Lecture will be delivered by the master-elect of Christ's College, Cambridge, Professor Jane Stapleton, on 14 July 2016 at 5.15pm in the NSW Bar Association Common Room. The lecture will be entitled "Lady Margaret Beaufort and the Law".

Papers to note: Judicial Systems and Corruption

The International Bar Association (IBA), in partnership with the Basel Institute on Governance, has published the results of a global survey on corruption in judicial systems. The report found, among other things, that judges who engage in corrupt conduct do so most frequently in their interactions with lawyers and other judges, in contrast to lawyers who interact more regularly with third parties serving as intermediaries to influence cases. Robert Montgomery will be sworn-in as a judge of the District Court of NSW at a formal ceremony in the John Maddison Tower on Level 21, at 9.00am on Monday, 30 May 2016. Noel Hutley SC will speak on behalf of the New South Wales Bar. Barristers should wear wigs and gowns. Senior counsel should wear full-bottomed wigs.

Psychology study on jury empanelments

InBrief has been contacted by Nicola Irwin Faulks, who is undertaking a research project for her honours degree in psychology at Macquarie University under the supervision of Dr. Eugene Chekaluk. The study is investigating decision-making during jury empanelment. Participants will be asked to take part in an online study which involves two hypothetical jury empanelments and a brief questionnaire. The study runs for approximately 25-30 minutes.

You will not be required to disclose any overly personal information, and any information gathered will remain confidential. You may also end participation at any time without reason or consequence. If you are interested in this area then please participate in this study!

First concert of the NSW Lawyers Orchestra - 26 June 2016

The NSW Lawyers Orchestra invites you to join them for their first ever concert on 26 June 2016, 2.30pm at The Great Hall 215 Forbes Street, Darlinghurst NSW 2010. In their first season, ever, the orchestra will bring Russian Theatre and Ballet music alive, with performances of Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev narrated by Justice Peter Hidden, the Masquerade Waltz by Soviet-Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian, Romeo and Juliet Ballet Suite by Sergei Prokofiev; and the Allegro meno mosso of Dimitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No 1 in F minor. 30th anniversary of Lachlan Macquarie Chambers

Law Council critical of NT Government's bail plans
