Eight out of ten Australians believe legal aid should be there in times of need

Australians are overwhelmingly in favour of universal legal aid availability, according to an independent national poll commissioned by the Legal Aid Matters campaign. Unfortunately, only eight per cent of Australians qualify for legal aid. Incredibly, more than half of people living below the poverty line do not qualify. The Legal Aid Matters campaign is calling on the next federal government to inject $350 million into legal aid to end the current funding crisis. You only have a couple of days to avoid the statutory late fee!

All practising certificate renewal documentation and payment must be received by the Bar Association on or before Tuesday, 7 June 2016 otherwise a late fee applies.

Do not wait until you have confirmation of insurance to return your completed renewal form and payment. Preliminary processing of your practising certificate can begin and your insurance can be matched up with your renewal documentation once confirmation of insurance is received.

If you have decided not to renew your practising certificate this year, would you please advise us in writing that this is your intention so we can note our records.

Farewell to the Hon Justice Craig - 9am tomorrow

The Land and Environment Court of NSW will hold a ceremonial sitting to farewell the Hon Justice Malcolm Craig tomorrow, Friday, 3 June 2016 at 9.00am. President Noel Hutley SC will speak on behalf of the New South Wales Bar. No robes or wigs will be worn on this occasion.

Michael Sweeney SC, former barrister and judge of the Industrial Commission of NSW, died in the early hours of Tuesday morning at Prince of Wales Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be advised.

The next meeting of the Bar Book club will be on Tuesday, 7 June 2016 at 6.00pm. The subject will be Robert Seethaler’s A Whole Life, described in this review as "as haunting and as spare as Stoner". For those members who enjoyed John Williams’s Stoner, hopefully this will be just as good.
