The Women Barristers Forum will hold its AGM on Thursday, 23 June 2016 at 5.00pm in Conference Room 3, NSW Bar Association, Selborne Chambers, 174 Phillip Street, Sydney.

The WBF is a section of the NSW Bar Association. All women members of the NSW Bar Association are eligible to be members of the WBF and vote in the election of the Committee of the WBF at the AGM. The Committee of the WBF presently comprises a chair/convenor, two vice chair/convenor/s, two secretaries and a treasurer.

Participation is welcomed from all members. We hope to see you at the AGM. Light refreshments after the meeting.

HPW Johnston QC, former judge of the District Court, has died. A funeral will be held at St Mary's Catholic Church, 24 King Street, Buderim (Qld) on Friday, 10 June 2016 at 11.00am. Following the service Phillip will be laid to rest at the Mooloolah Cemetery, Steve Irwin Way, Glenview.

Attorney General Gabrielle Upton has announced two new appointments to the NSW Law Reform Commission. Supreme Court judge the Hon Justice Paul Brereton AM RFD has been appointed deputy chairperson, while the CEO of NSW Council of Social Service Tracy Howe has been named as a part-time commissioner. The 2016 Justice Awards dinner will be held on Thursday, 13 October 2016 at the Strangers' Dining Room, Parliament House, Macquarie Street, Sydney. Nominations for the 2016 Justice Awards close on Thursday, 30 June 2016. The Law and Justice Volunteer Award is sponsored by the Bar Association. It is presented to an individual or group of individuals who, in a voluntary capacity, have demonstrated outstanding commitment to improving access to justice in NSW, particularly for socially and economically disadvantaged people. First concert of the NSW Lawyers Orchestra - 26 June 2016

The NSW Lawyers Orchestra invites you to join them for their first ever concert on 26 June 2016, 2.30pm at The Great Hall 215 Forbes Street, Darlinghurst NSW 2010. In their first season, ever, the orchestra will bring Russian Theatre and Ballet music alive, with performances of Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev narrated by Justice Peter Hidden, the Masquerade Waltz by Soviet-Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian, Romeo and Juliet Ballet Suite by Sergei Prokofiev; and the Allegro meno mosso of Dimitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No 1 in F minor. Review of the Victims Rights and Support Act 2013

The NSW Department of Justice is conducting a review of the Victims Rights and Support Act 2013 (NSW) to determine whether the policy objectives of the Act remain valid and whether the terms of the Act remain appropriate for securing those objectives. New Supreme Court practice note

Chief Justice T F Bathurst AC has issued Practice Note SC EQ 13 - Adoptions. The Practice Note commences operation on Friday, 1 July 2016. It applies to proceedings under the Adoption Act 2000 (NSW) and proceedings under the Family Law (Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption) Regulations 1998 (Cth).

LAST CHANCE TO AVOID THE STATUTORY LATE FEE!

All practising certificate renewal documentation and payment must be received by the Bar Association tomorrow, Tuesday, 7 June 2016 otherwise a late fee applies.

Do not wait until you have confirmation of insurance to return your completed renewal form and payment. Preliminary processing of your practising certificate can begin and your insurance can be matched up with your renewal documentation once confirmation of insurance is received.
