The Red Mass 2016

The Red Mass to celebrate the commencement of the 2016 Law Year will be held at 9.00am on Monday, 1 February 2016 at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney. The Red Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop Fisher OP. Concelebrating will be Bishop Antoine-Charbel Tarabay OLM of the Maronite Diocese of St Maroun. Judges and counsel are invited to robe in the Crypt from 8:30am. There will be a procession of judges and counsel into the Cathedral. Morning tea will be served in Cathedral House immediately after the ceremony.

Anglican Church Service for 2016 Law Year

The Anglican 2016 Church Service for the commencement of the 2016 Law Year will be celebrated on Monday, 1 February 2016 at 10.30am in St James’ Anglican Church, King Street,by the Most Rev Dr Glenn Davies, archbishop of Sydney, and the Rev Andrew Sempell, rector of St James’ Anglican Church.

Immigration Advice and Rights Centre movie night

The Immigration Advice and Rights Centre provides free immigration advice and representation to refugees and financially disadvantaged immigrants in New South Wales. The IARC is hosting a fundraiser movie night on Wednesday, 3 February 2016 at the Dendy Cinemas Opera Quays (East Circular Quay). Book your tickets here.

The movie, Spotlight is tipped for an Oscar nomination. It is the true story of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe "Spotlight" team of reporters whose investigation into allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church uncover a decades-long cover-up at the highest levels of Boston's religious, legal, and government establishment, touching off a wave of revelations around the world. This tense investigative dramatic-thriller traces the steps to one of the biggest cover-ups in modern times.

Appointment to the Land and Environment Court

Acting Justice Timothy Moore will be sworn-in as a judge of the Land and Environment Court of NSW at a ceremonial sitting in the Banco Court on Tuesday, 2 February 2016 at 9.30am. Chrissa Loukas SC, treasurer of the Bar Association, will speak on behalf of the New South Wales Bar.

Advocacy Workshop included in the Orange 2016 CPD Conference, Sunday 21 February

The Orange CPD Conference Saturday, 20 February and Sunday, 21 February includes an Advocacy workshop organised by the Australian Advocacy Institute which will take place on Sunday morning.

Registrations are now open for the New South Wales Bar Association Regional CPD Conferences. The 2016 CPD Conferences have been confirmed for the following dates and locations:

  • Saturday, 13 February: North Coast
  • Saturday, 20 February and Sunday, 21 February (Advocacy Workshop): Orange
  • Saturday, 27 February: Newcastle
  • Saturday, 12 March: Parramatta
  • Saturday, 19 March: Sydney

Papers to note: new Land and Environment Court practice note

The chief judge of the Land and Environment Court, the Honourable Justice B J Preston, has issued a new practice note, Practice Note - Section 56A Appeals, which commenced on Monday, 21 December 2015. It applies to proceedings on appeal from a decision of a commissioner pursuant to section 56A of the Land and Environment Court Act 1979. Learn more here.

LCA voices concern over Chinese government crackdown on lawyers

The Law Council of Australia has expressed deep concern at the Chinese government's ongoing crackdown on lawyers, law firm staff, human rights activists and their family members. It's believed that 36 lawyers and activists are currently detained or being held incommunicado and 30 lawyers and activists are forbidden from leaving China. Learn more here.

2016 Personal Injury/Common Law Conference
