For the diary: ALRC symposium on "Proportionality and the Constitution"

As part of its Freedoms Inquiry, the Australian Law Reform Commission will hold a symposium on Thursday, 8 October 2015 between 5.30pm and 7.00pm in Courtroom 1 of the Federal Court, Queens Square, Sydney. The topic will be "Proportionality and the Constitution" and the speakers will be: Professor Rosalind Croucher AM, ALRC president and commissioner for the inquiry; Professor Denise Meyerson, Macquarie Law School, Professor Anne Twomey, Sydney Law School, Michael Sexton SC, NSW solicitor-general. The 2015 Clerks' Conference and Dinner will take place on Friday, 23 October. It will be held in the Manhattan Room at Doltone House. The Guest of Honour at the dinner will be The Commonwealth Solicitor-General, Justin Gleeson SC. The theme of this year’s conference is “Bouncing Back – Building Resilience for a Stronger Future”.

All clerks are encouraged to attend for what promises to be a full program including sessions on workplace health & safety, dealing with emergency situations and their aftermath and performing under pressure. For full program details please download a flyer here.

2015 Tristan Jepson Memorial Lecture

The Annual Tristan Jepson Memorial Foundation Lecture will take place on 27 October 2015 at 6.00pm in the Federal Court of Australia, Level 21, Queens Square. The lecture will be delivered by Alex Malley FCPA, chief executive of CPA Australia. The 2015 lecture will be recorded and later distributed to those who cannot attend in person in Sydney.

Nomination forms for election of the 2016 Bar Council were posted on Friday, 18 September to all members of the Bar Association eligible to nominate or be nominated. Any member who has not received their nomination form by the morning of Tuesday, 29 September 2015 and who wishes to nominate should contact the Bar Association on 9232 4055. Nomination forms are also available from the Bar Association's Reception. Nominations close at 4.00pm on Monday, 12 October 2015.

Accreditation as a mediator

Members who wish to apply for accreditation, or renewal of accreditation, as a mediator by the New South Wales Bar Association in 2016-17, can do so using this application form. Please note the deadline for applications is Friday, 25 September 2015, at 5.00pm. Applications are to be submitted by email in soft copy as a PDF. This will involving printing the form, inserting the relevant documentation and scanning it back to the Bar Association.

For the diary: International Humanitarian Law Fundamentals

The Red Cross will host a seminar on International Humanitarian Law Fundamentals on Saturday, 26 September, which will examine the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols and other international issues associated with armed conflict. A follow up seminar on Alternative Experiences of Conflict will be held on Saturday, 24 October from 9.30am-4.30pm. It will focus on overlooked groups, how they experience armed conflict and the special protections they are afforded.

Guest speakers
  • Kirsten Keith, former legal officer for the prosecution at the Special Court for Sierra Leone, will speak about sexual violence prosecutions at the international tribunals.

  • Dr Shireen Daft, who recently completed a PhD in international law, will speak about child soldiers.

  • Emma Phillips, former UNHCR protection and refugee specialist, will talk about vulnerable groups in refugee camps.

The course will be held at the St Andrews House office, level 4, 464 Kent St, Sydney. A light lunch is provided.

On Thursday, 8 October 2015 International Justice Mission Australia will host a breakfast event with NSW Premier Mike Baird. Explore ways to help strengthen justice systems in our region so that the poor are protected from violence, slavery and exploitation by the commercial sex trade. Funeral arrangements for Ronald William Washington (1949-2015)

Two funeral services will be held to commemorate the life of Ronald William (Bill) Washington, formerly of Eleventh Floor Garfield Barwick Chambers. The first will be at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Mudgee on Wednesday, 23 September at 3.00pm. The second will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1 Keenan Street, Mona Vale, at 12.00pm on Friday, 25 September. This will be followed by a wake at the Newport Surf Lifesaving Club.

The federal minister for employment has announced four appointments to the Fair Work Commission. Mr Geoffrey Bull has been appointed as a a deputy president of the commission. NSW barrister Mr Tony Saunders has been appointed as a commissioner, along with Ms Tanya Cirkovic and Mr Christopher Platt. Learn more

Next meeting of the Bar Book Club

The next meeting of the Bar Book Club will be on Tuesday, 13 October. The chosen book will be this year’s Pulitzer Prize winner, All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. For those of you who are time poor, there is a 30 minute summary of the book (indeed you can even get it in audio format); for those of a more traditional bent, there is the NY Times book review and the book.
