End of year festivities for the Bar Book Club

The last meeting for the year of the Bar Book Club will be held at 6.00pm on Wednesday, 2 December 2014. The book for the next meeting is Ian McEwan’s The Children Act.

We will also be having an end of year dinner at which NO book shall be discussed. This will be held on Wednesday, 19 November 2014 at La Rosa restaurant. If you would like to attend, please email library@nswbar.asn.au by close of business Friday, 14 November 2014.

The 2015 Personal Injury and Common Law Conference will be held at the Hilton Sydney on Saturday 21 March. The conference offers 6.5 CPD points.

The NSW Bar Association 2015 CPD Conferences have been confirmed for the following dates and locations:

  • Saturday, 21 February: Newcastle
  • Saturday, 28 February and Sunday, 1 March: Orange
  • Saturday, 7 March: North Coast
  • Saturday, 14 March: Parramatta
  • Saturday, 28 March: Sydney

Speaker details and registration forms will be made available over the coming weeks. These will be advertised in In Brief as well as on the NSW Bar Association Website.

Each conference will cover all four mandatory CPD strands (Practice Management, Ethics, Advocacy and Substantive Law) and will comprise a total of six CPD points. For the Orange conference, 10 points will be offered over two days.

Legal Aid NSW annual report

Legal Aid NSW has published its annual report for 2013-14, during which, one million services in civil, family and criminal law were provided. Attorney General Brad Hazzard praised the organisation, saying: "Legal Aid lawyers are constantly lifting people out of what appears to be insurmountable legal problems – they are champions fighting on behalf of the community." Common Law Practice Update 70

The 4th Annual Ron McCallum Debate

The Australian Institute of Employment Rights will hold the 4th Annual Ron McCallum Debate at the Four Seasons Hotel on Tuesday, 25 November 2014 (4.00pm to 6.00pm). The debate will be chaired by the Hon Geoff Giudice AO and will feature Emeritus Professor Ron McCallum AO, Stephen Smith, director national industrial relations, Australian Industry Group, Louise Tarrant, former national secretary, United Voice, Professor Barbara Pocock, former director of the Centre for Work + Life and Colleen Chen, co-founder of Interns Australia. Forbes Society legal history tutorial

On Wednesday, 12 November 2014 Justice Richard Button of the Supreme Court will present a Forbes Society tutorial on the history of the criminal law in NSW. The tutorial will commence at 5.10pm and conclude no later than 6.10pm. The venue for the tutorial will be Court No 1 in the Hospital Road Court Complex, with entry via the chambers of Lindsay J. Everybody is welcome. Light refreshments will be served.

2014 Great Bar Boat Race

The 31st Great Bar Boat Race will be held on Monday, 22 December 2014 at 11.00am. Members are invited to compete in a friendly competition with solicitors. ABA Advanced Trial Advocacy - Melbourne

The ABA will run its ninth Advanced Trial Advocacy Course on 19-23 January 2015 at the Federal Court Complex in Melbourne. This is a residential five day course that will develop your skills as an experienced barrister. The course focuses on developing your strengths in addressing, examining-in-chief and cross-examining. Silks of 2014 donate to charity

It's a long-standing tradition that each year the new silks make a donation to one or more charities. The 2014 silks have donated a total of $78,000, with The Black Dog Institute and the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation each receiving $39,000.
