Self Tort into band competition finals

Brian Ralston of Latham Chambers has entered his band, Self Tort, in 702ABC's "Exhumed": the competition "for the never-weres". Yesterday Brian's band was announced as one of five Sydney finalists. They will be performing in the final at The Basement on Thursday, 15 August 2013. Members interested in attending can apply for tickets here. The entries for the five finalists can be heard here and you can support Self Tort by liking their song "Oldest Roadies on the Earth".

New exhibition by Tamara Dean

Tamara Dean, who judged the Indigenous Barristers Trust Photo competition, is proud to announce her forthcoming exhibition at Olsen Irwin Gallery on 7-25 August 2013. 'The Edge', her new body of work is an exploration of the informal rites of passage created by young people in relationship with the natural world. The initiations, the pushing of physical, spiritual and emotional limits in order to discover one's sense of self.

Tamara Dean has been awarded the Art Omi International Artists Residency in New York this coming June. Tamara's work is also exhibited and featured in 4 Stories, an exhibition curated by Anna Maria Antoinette D' Addario in Darling Quarter, Darling Harbour as part of Reportage Festival opening. Lionel Murphy legal aid vision blurred by underfunding, says Law Council

Law Council of Australia president, Mr Michael Colbran QC, said Australian governments have failed to fulfill the ideals of the legal aid system envisioned at its commencement forty years ago.

"The Hon. Lionel Murphy believed it was imperative for the Commonwealth government to take action to ensure that legal aid be readily and equally available to all Australian citizens. Forty years on, legal aid is a system in crisis...Working families and the working poor are trapped in a paradoxical state where they do not qualify for legal aid and yet cannot afford to pay for legal representation", Mr Colbran said.

MAA releases actuarial advice

The Motor Accidents Authority has today released its actuarial advice on the government's Motor Accident Injuries Amendment Bill 2013, which it claims will lower the cost of green slips for motorists. The costings can be found on the NSW Government's Have Your Say web site. The Bar Association has responded in today's Daily Telegraph. The minister's media release can be found here.

"The Story Project" traces the history of the first Aboriginal Legal Service in Australia. It is not one story, but many - told in the voices of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people who worked together to achieve greater justice Indigenous people. The Story Project is an initiative of the Board of Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT) to celebrate 40 years of service. You can view it, and many other short videos, here on the ALSNSWACT channel.

TONIGHT: Professor Christine Kaufmann, University of Zurich Law School

Tonight's seminar will be presented by Professor Christine Kaufmann from University of Zurich Law School. Professor Kaufmann leads the University of Zurich Competence Center for Human Rights (UZHR), part of the Swiss Centre of Expertise in Human Rights. The UZHR is responsible for the Cluster Human Rights and Business in the Swiss Centre, and it focuses in particular on the integration of human rights standards in economic activities of both public and private actors.

Professor Paul Redmond, Emeritus Professor, University of New South Wales, will chair the seminar and Alice Cope, Executive Manager, UN Global Compact Network Australia will be providing commentary.

Jane Needham SC has won the Senior Barrister Award at the 2013 Lawyers Weekly Law Awards. According to LW, the senior vice-president "beat a strong field of finalists that included the redoubtable Tom Percy QC from Perth and Tim North SC from Foley’s List in Melbourne". Nuala Shaw, barrister at 5 Wentworth Chambers in Sydney and Alfred Lutwyche Chambers in Brisbane, won the Junior Counsel Award. Learn more here.

LCA calls on COAG to deal with Indigenous imprisonment rates

The Law Council and the Australian Bar Association met today in Darwin with representatives from National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services to discuss the unacceptably high rate of Indigenous Australians and to identify how governments may better address it. Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus QC and Parliamentary Secretary Shayne Neumann have announced $4 million over four years for legal assistance and advice in federal civil law matters in areas such as: social security, discrimination, consumer law, judicial review, bankruptcy, immigration and employment law. Law Council expresses concerns over PNG Asylum Seeker Arrangement

The Law Council of Australia has expressed concern over the Australian Government’s recent announcement of a Regional Settlement Arrangement with Papua New Guinea (PNG).

The Arrangement involves the transfer of asylum seekers, arriving by boat from 19 July 2013 onwards, to PNG for processing and resettlement, and builds on the existing Memorandum of Understanding between Australia and PNG relating to the processing of asylum seekers on Manus Island.

Law Council President, Mr Michael Colbran QC, said there were a number of issues of concern stemming from the continued lack of clarity about the details of the system for processing claims in PNG and its conformity to Australia’s obligations under the applicable UN Convention. Media alert - CTP Roundtable

Fowllowing the Government's CTP roundtable held at Parliament House yesterday, President Phillip Boulten SC issued a media release overnight. The release focusses upon the admission made in the course of the day's proceedings by the Insurance Council representative that the insurance industry could not guarantee that the Government's proposed reforms would result in a reduction in Green Slip prices. View the media release. Andrew Stone, who represented the Association at the roundtable, also appeared on the Ray Hadley Show on 2GB this morning to discuss events at the roundtable. Volunteers needed for the Benjamin Andrew Footpath Library

The Benjamin Andrew Footpath Library needs volunteers from the NSW Bar to spend a couple of hours packing books for various hostels in New South Wales at the library’s storage unit at Kennard's Storage in Waterloo. The next session is on Saturday, 3 August at 1pm. We have been asked to send two volunteers. Annual Bar Football Challenge and Sports Law Conference

The 6th Annual Bar Football Challenge (against teams from the bars of Victoria and Qld) and the 3rd Annual Sports Law Conference will be held in Sydney on 21 September 2013.

The theme for this year’s conference is Anti-Doping in Sports. Speaking are John Marshall SC on "Aspects of the Peptide Inquiry Announced 7 February 2013", Michael Gleeson on "The Role of the Criminal Law and Doping in Sport" and Simon Philips on "Corporate Governance and Potential Liability for Sporting Organisations in the light of the Peptide Inquiry."

The conference, which qualifies for CPD units, will be held at the 12 Wentworth Selborne Chambers meeting facilities on 3rd Floor, 174 Phillip Street, Sydney commencing at 8:30 AM with registration from 8 AM. A nominal fee of $75 (cash) will be charged with the proceeds to be donated to "Canteen".

The Football Challenge will be held at St Andrews College Oval at the University of Sydney commencing at 1 pm.

Places at the conference are strictly limited.

NSWLRC inquiry into parole

The NSW Law Reform Commission is conducting a review the parole system in NSW and has released a scoping paper to obtain views on the issues that require reform. The commission invites members of the New South Wales Bar to make submissions on: any issues not covered in the Scoping Paper that we should consider; any issues covered in the Scoping Paper that we should not consider, and the priority areas for consideration and reform.

The closing date for submissions is Friday, 23 August 2013. Information about how to make a submission is contained in the scoping paper and the NSWLR website.
