NSW Bar FC now recruiting for 2013 season

NSW Bar FC is open to barristers, members of the judiciary, clerks and employees of the Bar Association regardless of level of ability or fitness but who are united in a passion for the World Game and a determination to free themselves, if only temporarily, of the shackles of professional life.

NSW Bar FC competes in the Domain Soccer League (DSL) (a lunchtime league), in the annual "State of Origin" tournament against teams from the Victoria and Queensland Bars and in the Law Firm Champions Cup.

To commemorate the 5th anniversary of the club a new playing strip will be launched to coincide with the commencement of the DSL in April which players and supporters will be able to purchase. (Samples will be available for sizing purposes towards the end of next week).

National Access to Justice and Pro Bono Conference

The National Access to Justice and Pro Bono Conference will be held in Melbourne on 21–22 March 2013. The event is jointly hosted by the Law Council of Australia, Law Institute of Victoria and National Pro Bono Resource Centre. The program covers cutting edge access to justice issues faced across Australia and includes speakers from around Australia and abroad, including South Africa, Brazil, Japan and the United Kingdom. Delegates will also have the opportunity to network with leaders in the legal assistance sector at a number of social events, including the conference dinner. It's an honour: members recognised in the Australia Day Honours

The following members of the Bar Association were recognised in this year's Australia Day Honours:

The Hon Justice James Allsop AO (Officer in the General Division) - for distinguished service to the judiciary and the law, as a judge, through reforms to equity and access, and through contributions to the administration of maritime law and legal education.

Mark Tedeschi AM QC (Member in the General Division) - for significant service to the law as a prosecutor and to photography.

Seminar on the right to silence 11 February 2013, 5.15pm

On Monday 11 February, the Association is hosting a joint seminar with the Sydney Institute of Criminology on proposed changes to the right to silence in NSW. The NSW Government has foreshadowed legislation that will change the standard caution given to suspects held in police custody. This panel session will examine the impact of the proposed amendments on one of the fundamental tenets of our legal system - the right to silence - and the implications for accused, legal practitioners and the criminal justice system as a whole. Speakers will include the President, Phillip Boulten SC and Associate Professor David Hamer from the University of Sydney Law School. Admission is free, but registration is essential. Register now.

Presented by Open Door Productions the ‘Presentation Power’ series seeks to build the skills and tools needed for making powerful submissions and speeches to judges and juries, including Opening Address and Closing Argument. The focus is on how barristers can enhance their persuasive success through the preparation and delivery of these trial elements.

Swearing in ceremony for the Hon Justice James Allsop as Chief Justice of the Federal Court

The Hon Justice James Allsop will be sworn in as Chief Justice of the Federal Court at a ceremonial sitting of the Full Court of the Federal Court in Sydney on Monday 4 March 2013.The ceremonial sitting will be held at 9.30am in Court 1, Level 21, Federal Court of Australia, Law Courts Building, Queens Square, Sydney. Bar Association President Phillip Boulten SC will speak on behalf of the New South Wales Bar.

Parramatta service to mark the opening of Law Term - 1 February 2013

All members are invited to attend an Inter-Church Law Service to mark the commencement of the 2013 Law Term to be held in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Cnr Marist Place and Victoria Road, Parramatta at 9.30am on Friday 1 February. The procession will assemble in the Plaza prior to 9:15 and will move to the Cathedral at approximately 9:20 am on the day.

Government announces formal establishment of the royal commission on child abuse

The Australian Government has appointed a six-member Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, to be led by the Hon Justice Peter McClellan AM. The royal commission is to prepare an interim report by no later than 30 June 2014. Wills Register has expired

The Wills Register has been removed from the website of the Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages and will be closed in late 2013. Searches relating to wills already listed on the register will not be affected, and interested parties can continue to make applications for information about the location of those wills in the normal fashion. The Australian Institute of International Affairs and the International Law Association (Australian Branch) call for applications for the 2013 Peter Nygh Hague Conference Internship. Applications close on 30 January 2013. Each year, the internship provides a student, graduate or post graduate with the rare opportunity to travel to The Hague in The Netherlands and work in the area of Private International Law. Successful applicants receive their travel expenses to The Netherlands and a contribution to their living expenses for the duration of the internship. LCA president outlines agenda for 2013

The new Law Council of Australia president, Joseph Catanzariti, has today outlined his vision for 2013. Mr Catanzariti identified five key priorities for the Law Council, including access to justice, human rights advocacy, international engagement, strengthening the position of the Law Council sections, and addressing the high attrition rates of women lawyers.
