Research on independent children

The Australian Institute of Family Studies is conducting research on Independent Children’s Lawyers (ICLs) in the family law system. This research has been commissioned and funded by the Attorney General’s Department, which also funds legal aid commissions to provide ICL services. The project involves several different studies designed to collect data from ICLs and professionals who work with ICLs and families involved with ICLs. All ICLs and family law solicitors and barristers are invited to participate in our survey, which is due to close on Friday 16 November. The 15 Bobber to celebrate the appointment of his Honour Judge Chris Craigie SC to the District Court of New South Wales will be held on Friday, 30 November 2012. Speaking for His Honour will be Chrissa Loukas SC and Helen Cox. Please note the later start time with the 15 Bobber commencing at 5.45pm with the speeches beginning at 6.00pm. The Hon Kevin Lindgren AM QC and the Hon Justice Anthony Meagher will also be presented with life membership of the Bar Association at a small ceremony during the 15 Bobber. Pre-registration for the 15 Bobber is $15 and MUST be received by the association by 3.00pm Thursday, 1 November. Reservations made after this time and at the door will be $25. Tonight: The 2012 Forbes Lecture

The 2012 Forbes Lecture, entitled A Man for all Seasons: The Life and Times of Chief Justice Sir William Portus Cullen, will be delivered by Tony Cunneen at 5.15pm in the Bar Association Common Room. The session will be chaired by the Honourable T F Bathurst, Chief Justice of NSW.

The 2012 Forbes Lecture will cover Sir William’s leadership in a range of fields and will draw on a wide variety of primary and secondary sources. The lecture will also include an outline of Lady Cullen’s activities as leader of the Red Cross and other activities. The seminar will explore the aftermath of the collapse of the South Sea Company.� As well as ruining many and causing the economy of England to falter, it was the first significant event to cause the legislature to intervene in the administration of trusts. For decades after the bubble burst, investors continued to discover breaches by their fiduciaries.� One such case led to the downfall of the Lord Chancellor.� As a result, the landscape of fiduciary duties was changed forever.

On 26 October Attorney General Greg Smith SC announced that 23 of the state’s tribunals will be integrated into a new overarching tribunal, The NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT). Attorney-General Nicola Roxon�has announced the appointment of Ms Kathleen Farrell, current president of the Australian Government Takeovers Panel, as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia. Ms Farrell will be appointed to the Sydney registry of the court and will take up appointment on 5 December 2012.

Volunteers needed for the Benjamin Andrew Footpath Library

The Benjamin Andrew Footpath Library needs volunteers from the NSW Bar to spend a couple of hours packing books for various hostels in New South Wales at the library’s storage unit at Kennard's Storage in Brookvale. The next session is on Saturday, 3 November at 1pm. We have been asked to send two volunteers. You will be joining colleagues from Clayton Utz in this endeavour.
