The 17th Annual Europe Pacific Legal Conference (ADVERTISEMENT)

Wed Sep 12 2012

THE 17th annual Europe Pacific Legal Conference will be held in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy on 13 - 20 January 2013. In 2013, the Cortina Legal Conference will come into its 17th year, cementing its place as a conference institution for all levels of the legal profession, including the judiciary. The best endorsement for this conference is that many delegates have returned for the 5th & 6th time; its strength lying in its solid academic program and complementary social agenda.

The Cortina Legal Conference is a conference in an alpine environment (not exclusively for skiers) with a distinguished international program of speakers and a wonderful platform for networking.

We are pleased to announce Justice Dyson Heydon of the High Court of Australia as one of the notable speakers on the 2013 program.

AACL seminar on the Intersection Between Arbitration Law and Constitutional Principles

Fri Sep 07 2012

The Australian Association of Constitutional Law invites members to a seminar on "The Intersection Between Arbitration Law and Constitutional Principles", presented by Justin T Gleeson SC (Banco Chambers) and Mr Jonathon A Redwood (Banco Chambers) on Thursday, 13 September 2012in Court 18B,Federal Court, Queens Square at 5:30pm.

Federalism, both in the USA and Australia, limits but also encourages the development of domestic arbitration law. It has already been suggested that Chapter III of the Commonwealth Constitution may influence the structure of the arbitral process: PMT Partners Pty Ltd v Australian National Parks (1995) 184 CLR 301, 320–321. This paper considers ways in which these constitutional challenges might be addressed within the framework of the ever– converging international law of arbitration, and in a way that promotes Australian jurisdictions as international centres for alternative dispute resolution.

Commentators: Dr Andrew S Bell SC (Eleven Wentworth Chambers) and Mr Will Bateman (Freehills) Chair: The Hon Justice Ruth McColl AO (NSW Court of Appeal)
