It's official: John McCarthy QC appointed ambassador to the Holy See

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Foreign Minister Bob Carr have announced that John McCarthy QC will�replace the Hon Tim Fischer AC as�Australia's�ambassador to the Holy See. Mr McCarthy is expected to take up his appointment in September 2012. McCarthy QC was admitted to the New South Wales Bar in September 1976 and took silk in 1988. Since 1988 he has served as the Bar Association's representative on the Legal Aid Commission's Legal Aid Review Committee No.1. In September 2006 he was appointed a knight commander of the Order of St Gregory the Great for his�outstanding contribution to�The Thomas More Society. The Law Council of Australia�yesterday announced three new recipients of the John Koowarta Reconciliation Law Scholarship: Peter Dawson, Melinda Mitchell and Danielle Davis. Law Council of Australia President Ms Catherine Gale said the Scholarship, established in 1994, commemorates John Koowarta—a member of the Winychanam community at Aurukun and a traditional owner of the Archer River region on Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. Attorney General Greg Smith and Law Society President Justin Dowd will officially open Law Week 2012 at the Martin Place Legal Expo on Monday, 14 May. NSW Government prepares for WorkCover campaign

Minister for Finance & Services Greg Pearce today released an issues paper on the NSW Workers Compensation Scheme and announced a parliamentary committee as the next steps in preparation for changes to WorkCover. Mr Pearce said the scheme had a deficit of over $4 billion and would "fast become unviable". View the minister's announcement. The Bar Association will make a submission in response to the issues paper.

Interestingly, although the�offence of "discharge firearm into premises" rose from 71 incidents in 2010 to 100 incidents in 2011, the frequency of the offence at the end of 2011 was still well below its peak in 2002.
