2011 Ross Parsons Address in Taxation and Book Launch (ADVERTISEMENT)

This year's lecturer is Professor Dr Wolfgang Sch�n of Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance (Germany). His topic is the Distinct Equity of the Debt-Equity Distinction. A call to arms from the NSW Barristers Hockey Team

It's�been a big year at the bar for hockey.� The Legal Eagles have for the first time secured back to back premierships and among the regular players confidence is high. Now the NSW Bar has been challenged by the Victorian Bar to defend the Rupert Balfe – Leycester Meares Cup in Melbourne on 12 November 2011 and are calling for players to join in the fun and camaraderie. Julia Baird SC wins WLA NSW award

The Women Lawyers’ Association of NSW (WLA NSW) announced the winners of the 2011 NSW Women Lawyers Achievement Awards at a gala dinner held last Friday, 23 September 2011 at the WatersEdge.� The awards were supported by the Law Society of NSW, the NSW Bar Association, the NSW Department of Attorney General and Justice, the Australian Corporate Lawyers Association and the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency. The recipients of the awards were:

  • Lifetime Achievement Award: The Honourable Elizabeth Evatt AO
  • Woman Lawyer Advocate of the Year: Julia Baird SC, 12th Floor Selborne/Wentworth Chambers
  • Woman Lawyer of the Year in Private Practice: Anna Walsh, Maurice Blackburn
  • "In House" Woman Lawyer of the Year sponsored by Blake Dawson : Kate Perumal, Abigroup Ltd
  • Woman Lawyer of the Year in a Community Organisation: Emma Golledge, Kingsford Legal Centre

NSWLRC to review the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act

The Sentencing Snapshots�published by the Bureau of Crime Statistics follows an announcement by Attorney General Greg Smith SC MP on Friday that the NSW Law Reform Commission would�examine sentencing laws to ensure courts have adequate options when dealing with offenders. The terms of reference can be viewed on the NSWLRC web site. The deadline for preliminary submissions is 31 October 2011.

Extra time for submissions on serious invasion of privacy

Minister for Privacy and Freedom of Information Brendan O’Connor extended the deadline for submissions on a proposed statutory cause of action for serious invasions of privacy, following requests for more time from several organisations. The deadline has been extended by 10 working days until Friday, 18 November. Trivia night an outstanding success

The successful Equal Opportunity and Health Sport and Recreation Committee fundraising trivia night yesterday raised over $2,100 for the Young Love Foundation. Thank you to all those who participated and donated money to such a worthwhile cause.

The Young Love Foundation provide school and community based mentoring programs and personal development workshops for young people who are facing profound challenges in their lives, including mental health issues, substance abuse issues, and sexual health issues. Call for submissions on consolidation of federal anti-discrimination laws

Attorney General Robert McClelland and Minister for Finance and Deregulation Penny Wong today launched a public discussion paper to seek community views on the consolidation of federal anti-discrimination laws. Submissions on the discussion paper can be made until 1 February 2012. The discussion paper, details on how to make a submission and further information about the project are available at www.ag.gov.au/antidiscrimination.

The Hon Michael Moore has been appointed as an acting judge of the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales for the period commencing on 3 October 2011 and expiring on 16 December 2011.

Anthony�McAvoy has been appointed as an acting commissioner of the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales for the period commencing on 21 September 2011 and expiring on 20 September 2012.

Media watch: Campbell SC discusses CTP insurer profits and the need for an inquiry into NSW personal injury laws

Following the release of the Association's media statement earlier this week , the Chair of the Association's Common Law Committee Stephen Campbell SC has appeared on ABC 702 News and the Morning Show on ABC Radio Newcastle, discussing the need for an independent inquiry into NSW personal injury laws.

Amendments to Federal Magistrates Court forms

The Federal Magistrates Court (FMC) has advised the Association of changes to a number of forms as follows.

Fair Work Forms

In regard to applications in the Fair Work division of the FMC, there have been minor amendments to Forms 2, 3 & 4.

In Part H of forms 2 and 3 and in Part I of form 4 an additional sentence has been added under the injunction tick box as follows:

Please specify on an attached sheet the terms of the injunction or injunctions sought.

The amended forms are available on the Court's website

Draft Consent Parenting Orders

The Application – Draft Consent Parenting Orders and allegations of abuse or family violence has been amended.� Aside from some formatting changes, the new form has a new explanatory paragraph at the bottom of page 1 and now allows for additional parties, and the ICL, to sign the same form.

The Hon Justice Roger Giles will retire as a judge of appeal of the Supreme Court on Friday, 23 December 2011. A formal ceremony to mark this occasion will be held in Federal Court 1, L21, Queens Square, at 9.30am on Friday, 16 December. Attorney General Greg Smith SC will speak on behalf of the bar. Barristers should wear robes and wigs. Senior counsel wear full-bottomed wigs.
