Attorney General announces new Chief Executive Officer of Legal Aid NSW

The Attorney General, Greg Smith SC, today announced the appointment of Bill Grant OAM as the new Chief Executive Officer of Legal Aid NSW. Mr Grant has served for the last four years as Secretary-General of the Law Council of Australia, and previously held the Chief Executive Officer's position at Legal Aid NSW from 2001-2007. Bar Association shares the podium at the Justice Awards

Contributions�from members of the�bar, through the�Bar Association's Legal Assistance Referral Scheme, received due recognition�at�the Law and Justice Foundation's annual��Justice Awards, which�were held last night at the Strangers' Dining Room in Parliament House.�The Bar Association was joint winner of the Pro Bono Partnership award for the Sexual Assault Communications Privilege Pro Bono Scheme,�together with the Women's Legal Service, Freehills, Clayton Utz, Blake Dawson and the ODPP.

The Pro Bono Partnership Award is sponsored by the National Pro Bono Resource Centre. It is presented to a partnership comprising a private law firm, community organisation and/or community legal centre in NSW which has developed an outstanding pro bono legal assistance relationship, resulting in improved access to justice for disadvantaged people in the community.

Attorney General�Greg Smith SC�is seeking expressions of interest from, or nominations of, persons qualified for appointment as a judge of the District Court of NSW under the District Court Act 1973.�Interested or nominated persons must be either current or former judicial officers or Australian lawyers of at least seven years’ standing and should be conversant with the law and procedures applied in the District Court of NSW. In addition, all persons expressing an interest or nominating another person should refer to the selection criteria and guidance.

Expressions of interest: Expressions of interest in Word or PDF format addressing each of the selection criteria, accompanied by a detailed curriculum vitae and the names of at least two referees, and a response to each pre-screening question, must be completed online by 11 November 2011.

It will be necessary for previous applicants to submit a fresh expression of interest if they still seek such appointment.

NSW Government introduces amendment to sentencing procedure

The O'Farrell government has introduced into the Legislative Council the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Amendment (Children in Vehicles) Bill 2011 to make the presence of children an�exacerbating factor during the sentencing of drivers for a number of serious traffic offences. The opposition has criticised the bill as "tinkering" and pointed to the fact that judges already take such factors into consideration. Notwithstanding this critique, Labor will not oppose the bill. 2012 Constitutional Law Conference and Dinner

The event is organised by the Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law with the support of the Australian Association of Constitutional Law. Law Council urges more jurisdictions to join the national legal profession

The Law Council of Australia has welcomed yesterday's announcement by the Attorney-General Robert McClelland about the new National Legal Services Board and national legal services commissioner, as well�as the host jurisdictions for the legislation. The LCA also expressed�hope that non-participating jurisdictions will see the�benefits of a national profession and join it.�

None were more delighted than NSW Attorney General Greg Smith SC, who said the decision to locate the headquarters for the new national regulator in Sydney was recognition of the wealth of experience which NSW has in regulating Australia's largest and most diverse legal sector.

Changes in criminal law matters

Legal Aid NSW is introducing changes to the way aid is granted in criminal law matters.

These changes include:

1.�Amendments to the Criminal Law Fee Scale. 2.�The introduction of two panels; Specialist Barrister Panel (Complex Criminal Matters) and Criminal Appellate Matters Panel. 3.�A new application form in Grants Online, for District or Supreme Court trial and sentence matters, and Supreme Court Bail. 4.�The introduction of new Legal Aid NSW guidelines, and amendments to the Serious Criminal Law Panel and General Criminal Law Panel Practice Standards
