Court of Appeal submissions box has been moved

Due to refurbishments on Level 12 of the Law Courts Building, the old submissions box for the Court of Appeal has been replaced. Its replacement, which looks like a mail box, is now located adjacent to the public lift area on level 12.

New Workers Compensation Regulations

The Workers Compensation Regulation 2010 will commence tomorrow, 1 February 2010. It replaces the provisions of the Workers Compensation Regulation 2003, which�will be�repealed under the 'sunset' provisions contained in section 10 (2) of the Subordinate Legislation Act 1989. View the Regulations>

National Practitioner's Certificate in Mediation

The Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia (IAMA) will present again the National Practitioner’s Certificate in Mediation course in Sydney. The six day course, which meets the requirements of the National Accreditation Standards for Mediators, is divided into two intensive sessions, held over two weeks.� The next course will be held on 2 – 5 March and 11 – 12 March at IAMA's premises on �Level 9, 52 Phillip Street, Sydney. Changes to workers compensation laws take effect next week

The Workers Compensation Legislation Amendment Act 2010 received Assent on 16 November 2010 and will be proclaimed to commence on 1 February2011.

ln summary the changes in the Act will:

  • align the maximum age for determining future economic loss under Work lnjury Damages to eligibility for the aged pension under the Social Security Act 1991 (Cth);
  • clarify that the maximum statutory cap for weekly benefits for partial incapacity under section 40 of the Workers Compensation Act 1987 applies to the benefit entitlement only (exclusive of any wages the claimant receives for performing work);
  • provide for reimbursement of the cost of obtaining a permanent impairment medical certificate as part of the worker's permanent impairment compensation claim;
  • restrict appeals in the Workers Compensation Commission to cases where there is some "legal, factual or discretionary error";

  • clarify arrangements for the admission of fresh or additional evidence in appeals;

  • enable certain matters to be reconsidered by the commission as an alternative to formal legal appeals or challenges;�
  • give the commission discretion to hear appeals of an interlocutory nature prior to the finalisation of the primary matter; and make other administrative amendments.

30th Annual Pan-Orthodox church service marking the opening of the 2011 Law Term

The 30th Annual Pan-Orthodox Church Service to mark the opening of the Law Term for 2011 will be held at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation, 242 Cleveland Street, Redfern on Tuesday, 8 February 2011 at 6.30pm. Practitioners and guests are asked to be seated in the Cathedral by 6.25pm.

The procession to the Cathedral will be led by the Chief Justice and will commence from the Rectory of the Archdiocese, which is situated in the grounds of the Cathedral. Those wishing to robe are invited to do so in the Rectory.

This invitation is also extended to your spouse/partner or guest.

At the conclusion of the Service, a light buffet and refreshments will be served at the reception room of the Archdiocese.

Appointment of Magistrate

The Governor-in-Council has approved of the appointment of Mr Shane McAnulty, barrister, as a Magistrate of the Local Court of New South Wales.

Mr McAnulty will be sworn in as a Magistrate at 9am, courtroom 5.2, at the Downing Centre, Liverpool Street, on 14 February 2011.

Acting Attorney General Verity Firth has announced the appointments of Louise McManus and Margaret McGlynn as part-time magistrates of the Local Court.

Both new appointments are outstanding members of the NSW legal profession, possessing the expertise and talent required of members of the judiciary, Ms Firth said.

The swearing-in ceremony will be in courtroom 5.2, level 5 of the Downing Centre at 9:00am on Monday 7 February 2011.

Synagogue service - opening of Law Term 2012

The Jewish service to mark the opening of the 2012 Law Term will be held at the Great Synagogue on Friday, 10 February 2012. The service�will be attended�by Chief Justice Tom Bathurst and will start at 5.30pm.�It will be�followed by the Friday night service and dinner with the chief justice as�guest speaker. Retirement ceremony for the Hon Justice Jennifer Boland

A ceremonial sitting of the Family Court of Australia will be held in Sydney tomorrow, 3 February 2011 to mark the retirement of the Hon Justice Jennifer Boland as a judge of the court and as an Appeal Division judge. The special sitting will be held at the Family Law Courts Building Sydney, Full courtroom, Level 7 at 4:30pm. Grahame Richardson SC will speak on behalf of the NSW Bar. Although the judges will not wear wigs, the convention is for counsel to wear theirs (senior counsel to wear full-bottomed wigs).

Swearing-in ceremony for John Sackar QC

A ceremonial sitting for the swearing-in of John Sackar QC as a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales will be held on Tuesday, 1 February 2011 at 9.30am in the Banco Court, Queens Square. Tom Bathurst QC will speak on behalf of the Bar. Barristers are to wear robes and wigs. Senior counsel should wear full-bottomed wigs.

The archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell AC, invites all members of the bench and bar to the celebration of the 2013 Red Mass. The mass will be held in St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney at 9:00am on Tuesday 29 January 2013, followed by morning tea in Cathedral House. Bernard Coles QC will give the reading on behalf of the Bar. Robing in the crypt is available from 8.30am.
