Slater QC wins Indigenous Barristers Trust art raffle

Anthony Slater QC, from Ground Floor Wentworth Chambers, is the winner of last night's Indigenous Barristers Trust raffle of an original indigenous artwork - ‘Pukara’ by Iyawi Wikilyiri. The work comes from the Tjungu Palya arts centre (Nyapari, APY Lands, South Australia).� It is valued at approximately $2000. Congratulations Mr Slater!

The NSW Parliamentary Library has issued Briefing Paper 5/2010, Bail Law: Developments, Debate and Statistics. This paper reviews recent changes to bail laws and it outlines certain criticisms of these laws by groups such as the Bail Reform Alliance. It also looks at reports that have discussed bail laws in relation to young people, statistical trends in bail outcomes and the number of remand prisoners.�

Sydney Law School has announced a new post-graduate course on World Trade Organization (WTO) Law I. Professor Gillian Triggs examines the role of the WTO within the international legal system and its implementation in national law as part of this second semester intensive unit. It will explore the fundamental principles of WTO Law, including 'most favoured nation', national treatment and non-discrimination, tariff bindings and customs duties, subsidies and non-tariff barriers to trade.

Swearing-in ceremony for Peter Garling SC

A ceremonial sitting for the swearing-in of Peter Garling SC as a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales will be held on Monday, 7 June 2010 at 9.30am in the Banco Court, Queens Square. Barristers are to wear robes and wigs. Senior counsel should wear full-bottomed wigs.

Following a joint announcement on 3 March 2010 by the Commonwealth and NSW Attorneys General of the establishment of Australian International Disputes Centre and the fact that the governments are seeking to increase the effectiveness, efficiency and affordability of international commercial arbitration through amendments to the relevant legislation, this seminar will be an opportunity for members to hear how the Sydney Bar can increase its expertise and role in international commercial arbitrations.
