Family Court Practice Direction No.4 of 2006: Trial of new forms for initiating application

In order to advance the implementation of the Combined Registry Project, the Family Court of Australia and the Federal Magistrates Court of Australia have agreed to trial a new form entitled 'Initiating Application'. In the Family Court, a new form entitled 'Response to Initiating Application' will be trialled also. Family Court Practice Direction No.4 of 2006 relates to the use of these new documents in the Family Court of Australia. The chief federal magistrate will be issuing a practice direction dealing with the use of the new initiating application in his court.

Swearings in

Peter Raymond Zahra SC will be sworn in as a District Court judge on Tuesday, 30 January, 2007 at 11.30 am in Court 21 John Maddison Tower, level 21, 86-90 Goulburn Street with a morning tea to follow in the Judges' Common Room.

Richard Dominic Cogswell SC will be sworn in as a District Court judge on Tuesday, 6 February, 2007 at 9.30 am in Court 21 John Maddison Tower, level 21, 86-90 Goulburn Street with a morning tea to follow in the Judges' Common Room.

The attorney general will speak on behalf of the Bar at these ceremonies.

Supreme Court of New South Wales

David Hammerschlag SC will be sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales on Tuesday, 30 January 2007 at 9.30am in the Banco Court.

Elizabeth Fullerton SC will be sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales on Monday, 19 February 2007 at 9.30am in the Banco Court.

The president of the Bar Association, Michael Slattery QC, will speak on behalf of the Bar at these ceremonies.

Uniform Civil Procedure Update

The Working Party on Civil Procedure is redesigning the civil forms. It will progressively release the forms for public comment from December 2006. Copies of the redesigned forms are available from Lawlink .

Advocacy course at the University of Western Australia

The Australian Bar Association is conducting an intensive five day residential advocacy course for 24 junior counsel at the University of Western Australia in Perth from 20-25 January 2007. A very experienced teaching team has been chosen comprising Silks and senior juniors from around Australia as well as Edwin Glasgow QC, a leading English silk.

Two positions have become available for NSW junior counsel who may wish to attend.

The cost of the course is $2,310 GST incl. and this includes meals, accommodation and materials. If you would like further details about the course please contact cdaeth@nswbar.asn.au Positions will be allocated on a first-in basis.

David Hammerschlag SC has been appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, effective 30 January 2007.

Elizabeth Fullerton SC has been appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, effective 19 February 2007.

Peter Zahra SC has been appointed as a judge of the District Court of New South Wales, effective 30 January 2007.

Library Hours over Christmas

The Bar Library will be closed from 12pm, Thursday 7 December 2006 for the New South Wales Bar Association Christmas Party. Due to the postponement of the library’s renovations, the library will now be closed from 12 noon Friday, 22 December 2006 to Friday, 12 January 2007 inclusive.

The library will be open from 10am to 4pm from Monday, 15 January 2006 to Friday 26 January 2007 and will resume normal opening hours (8:00am to 6:00pm) on 29 January 2007.

During the break, the following libraries will be open:

University of Sydney Law Library Sat 23 December to Mon 1 January 2006 CLOSED From Tues 2 January to Sun 4 March. Mon, Wed, Fri 9.00am-6.00pm Tues, Thurs 9.00am-8.00pm Sat 9.00am-4.45pm

This library allows access to barristers, although you cannot borrow items. Please follow the rules of this library.

The Law Courts Library Closed from 22 December 2006 to 29 January 2007 inclusive (external clients with a current library card may access the collection from 2 January 2007).

Please return all items on loan to the library by Thursday, 21 December 2006.

Bench & Bar v Solicitors Golf Day: 18 January 2007

The annual Bench and Bar v Solicitors Golf Day will be held at Manly Golf Club on Thursday, 18 January 2007. Christmas is fast approaching, so please respond to the invitation as soon as possible. The cost for the day's golf and after match dinner is $130.00 (inc GST). For members of Manly Golf Club the price is $70.00 (inc GST).

The event will be the usual two ball event with matches between the Bench and Bar v Solicitors based on their respective 2BBB score. There will be a shot gun start at 12 noon. We ask that you advise us if you have booked a cart so we can group you accordingly and send you to an appropriate tee.
